Introduction to the Hanover Research Pre-Review
We are pleased to announce that Dr. DiCarlo and Dr. Nelson have approved a new program to assist in the submission of competitive extramural grants. We have partnered with Hanover Research who will provide external review of research proposals. Hanover Research is a national organization that provides pre-review of grant proposals and substantive guidance for preparing more competitive applications. A major aspect of this program will be in the area of pre-review of proposals. We have engaged with Hanover in what is called a one-queue system. This means that they will review one grant at a time, with a typical turnaround time of 2-3 weeks. They offer tracked recommendations followed by a debriefing call with the grants specialist who worked on your proposal.
As I’m sure you recognize, coordinating our investigators into a “one-at-a-time” process may be complicated, and our initial approach may need to be modified. We also do not know the level of demand for the service and anticipate that investigators may be working toward the same submission deadlines. In any event, we will initiate the program and modify the procedures when necessary.
For our interested investigators, the process will begin by contacting your department head or center director on your desire to use this process. Once your project is approved internally for Hanover support, we will connect you to Hanover for an initial “scoping” call. This initial call ideally should be scheduled with several months’ lead time. As part of this call, the investigator will discuss with Hanover Research, the submission deadline, the type of grant, the RFA, the agency, your writing progress, and other preliminary information that will help to prepare for the submission. With this information, we will discuss your proposal and timeline with Hanover Research and have your project scheduled into the queue system.
Working with an additional partner requires advance planning and you will likely need to have your draft to Hanover Research 4-6 weeks in advance of your submission/internal deadlines. Hanover can provide different levels of support (see attached). Depending on the level of detail in their feedback this can take 2-3 weeks. Timelines can be shortened with advance scheduling. After Hanover sends you their recommendations, they will offer a debriefing call with the grants specialist who worked on your proposal so that you can ask questions. You need to allow time to make final corrections.
