RESIDENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

General Information

The School of Medicine is committed to supporting both the clinical and research activities of our residents. The goal of this program is to provide institutional support to foster the resident research and scholarly activities. It is intended to assist medical residents in pursuing a research project and bringing it to a conclusion. Although it is not intended solely for the publication costs, publication costs are permitted as part of the project. Eligibility requires the applicant to be an LSUHSC School of Medicine resident. The application must also include a sponsoring faculty member who will take responsibility for the research training of the applicant. The School of Medicine will provide up to $2,500 for resident research, which is contingent on a statement from the Department Head committing at least an equal amount in matching funds. 

Application Format

  1. Title Page (please use the Title Page template).
    1. Title of the research project
    2. Applicant information (name, degree, academic rank, campus address, email address, and telephone number)
    3. Faculty Mentor Information (name, degree, academic rank, campus address, email address, and telephone number)
    4. Signature of applicant
    5. Signed statement of commitment of matching departmental financial support by the Departmental Head

  2. Abstract (limited to 250 words)  – The purpose of the abstract is to provide a brief description of the project goals

  3.  Specific AimsProvide a concise statement of the research aims to be addressed in the proposed study. This should be a one page, single-spaced, a brief background, a description of the aims, and a statement of what new information will be provided by the study

  4.  IRB and IACUC Approval – For projects that are recommended for support, funding will be released only after receipt of notification from the applicant of IRB and/or IACUC approval. If these approvals are not required for the project, please state this in the proposal

  5. Budget (Must Use Online Form) – Support for the applicant’s research program should be a shared responsibility between the Clinical Department and the School of Medicine. The School of Medicine will provide up to $2,500 in support of research for a resident in your department/center. Again, this is contingent on at least an equal amount of departmental support. The department is not limited in the amount ofsupport, and can choose to provide additional support if warranted. * (See list of Unallowable Costs below) 

Proposal Submission

The signed original application (by resident, sponsor, and department head), and an electronic version of the proposal should be submitted to the Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Wayne Backes, for evaluation.


Evaluation of the Proposals

Proposals can be submitted at any time. Once submitted to the Dean’s office it will be given an expedited review, by a committee consisting of: the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean for Research, and the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Research.


Final Reports

At the completion of the project, a short 1-page report on the results of the research project must be submitted to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Lee Engel. This report is the joint responsibility of the resident and the faculty sponsor, and needs to include (1) a oneparagraph description of the research findings, (2) a listing of papers, abstracts and presentations, and (3) any other scholarly activities that have resulted from this project. 

 

*Unallowable Costs that are NOT supported by this mechanism:

Due to the limited funds available, some research-related costs are not supported by this funding mechanism, they include:

  1. Publication cost: It is not intended solely for the publication costs, publication costs are permitted only as part of the project.

  2. Resident salaries: Not allowable.

  3. Resident travel: Resident travel is not allowable unless it is part of the research project (e.g. travel to a remote site to collect data). The departmental contribution to the award can include travel to a meeting to present research that is the result of the research project.

  4. Membership dues: Not allowable.

  5. Research patient care: Regular patient care is not allowable; however, costs associated with performing a diagnostic test that is necessary for the research project, but not covered by normal patient care is an allowable expense. It is also allowable to include any patient incentives that are integral to participation in a study.

  6. Visas and passports: Not Allowable
