Office of Faculty Affairs Update
The Office of Faculty Affairs offers a wide range of resources and programs to support faculty at all career stages and across all LSU campuses. Our faculty contribute to LSU’s clinical, educational, and research missions through teaching, discovery, training, and practice across diverse areas of academic medicine. Collaboration is at the heart of our work as we strive to meet the needs of students, trainees, patients, and colleagues. Next Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Institutional Affairs
We want to welcome Susan Raine, MD, JD, LLM, MEd to our campus as she officially begins
her new role on September 1st. Dr. Raine is joining us from Baylor College of Medicine
where she has served as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development
and been a member of the faculty since 2005. She earned her medical degree and completed
her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor. Her additional training includes
a JD from the University of Texas School of Law, an LLM in Health Law and Policy from
the University of Houston Law Center, and a Master of Education in Curriculum Design
from the University of Houston.
Over the course of her career at Baylor, Dr. Raine has held multiple leadership roles, including Residency Program Director, Vice Chair of Education, Vice Chair of Global Health, and Director of Faculty Development. She led Baylor's global women's health initiative in Malawi, working with local and international partners to establish the country's first postgraduate training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
We are excited to have her join us at LSU School of Medicine and look forward to what the future holds in her new position.
Medical Education Scholarship Community
LSU SOM faculty are amazing educators. We share this work and advance the field through
dissemination of medical education scholarship. Are you interested in gaining new
perspectives on medical education research and scholarship? Whether you are curious
to learn more, have a project in mind, or just want to connect with others doing this
work, you are welcome in LENS - the LSU SOM Educators Network for Scholarship. Together we build skills, discuss new ideas, and collaborate on projects
that make a real difference for learners and faculty alike.

- September 17 at 4 p.m. on Zoom, Idea Incubator - A monthly, interactive series to share ideas, get feedback, identify collaborators, or request consultation and trouble shooting. Meetings will alternate between in person and Zoom.
- September 22 at noon on Zoom, Lunch and Learn - Join us for a didactic session while you eat lunch. This session will offer tips and focus on producing scholarship as a way to show others the great work you are already doing.
- October 15 at noon on Zoom, Writing Accountability - After a brief introduction, we will dedicate time to writing. Bring a project in progress or data you have been meaning to develop into an abstract or manuscript. You may write independently or use breakout rooms for feedback and help with editing.
Department Specific Faculty Development
Our Assistant Deans of Faculty Affairs, Drs. Moore and Creel, are available to provide
department specific development or help find a resource for specific needs. This could
include a brief faculty development discussion during scheduled faculty meetings,
larger workshops for faculty, or simply discussing what resources and opportunities
are available within the SOM. Potential faculty development topics include, but are
not limited to: giving/receiving feedback, wellness, mentoring, professional identity
development, generational differences with learners, supporting struggling learners,

can best support your faculty.
New Faculty Orientation
If you are a new faculty member and would like to connect with the Office of Faculty
Affairs, join us for a new faculty orientation session. These informal Zoom sessions
are held on the 4th Wednesday of every month from 12-1 p.m. with the Assistant Deans
for Faculty Affairs. Please reach out to somfacultydevelopment@lsuhsc.edu in order to receive a calendar invite with a zoom link.
Peer Observation of Teaching Program
A Peer Observation of Teaching (POT) Program is currently under development, which
was piloted by the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education and Department of Medicine
over the last academic year. POT is designed to provide one-on-one constructive feedback
to facilitate development of our educators’ teaching skills. This program provides
faculty with tools to conduct and receive a peer observation of their teaching skills
either in the classroom or clinical setting. Our aim is to launch the program in Fall
2026. A huge thank you to the work group who has been meeting regularly to review
and refine the program which includes Drs. Sarah Griffin, Julio Figuero, Cynthia Brown,
Cathy Lazarus, Sonya Van Nuland, Andrew Hollenbach, Robin English, Amy Creel and Michelle
Moore.
Mentoring Program
The SOM Mentoring Program welcomes applications from faculty at all ranks and disciplines.
The goal of the Mentoring Program is to support the academic advancement, professional
growth and success of faculty. The program is designed to pair interested faculty
with mentors outside of their discipline who align with their career goals and aspirations.
To initiate the mentorship process, faculty should submit a brief application at SOM Mentoring Program Website along with a copy of their CV.
