Education and Training for Undergraduate Students

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and Summer Research Internship programs offer college students opportunities to begin pursuing their futures in cancer research.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

The REU program is a 10-week summer research experience. Students receive one-on-one training by Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology faculty in designing and conducting experiments, as well as presenting results. They also participate in professional development seminars and interactive workshops on topics ranging from resume writing for graduate school applications to responsible conduct in research to support for scientific presentations. At the end of the program, students will share their results via a poster presentation at LSUHSC Research Day. Posters are evaluated by local scientists.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students must:

  • Attend a university in the New Orleans area.
    • Applicants attending universities outside of the New Orleans area will be considered only if they plan to live in the vicinity during the summer.
  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Major in any of the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science, or Environmental Science), with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
  • Attend an all-day mandatory orientation and be available during all dates of the program. If you have a prior commitment during the dates of the program, you are ineligible to participate. This is a full-time commitment.

This program is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Summer Research Internship Program

The Summer Research Internship Program is an 8-week program. Undergraduate interns work with mentors in the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center’s laboratories to learn lab techniques and gain research study skills, receive professional development and career preparation, and are trained in presentation skills. The program culminates with presentations at a poster session or oral symposium.

Why Join the Summer Research Internship Program?

After completing the program, many interns have gone on to:

  • Present their research at scientific or medical conferences.
  • Have their research published in scientific or medical journals.
  • Study at medical and graduate schools.
  • Work in STEM fields.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students must:

  • Major in any of the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science, or Environmental Science).
