I am excited to once again have the opportunity to share so many LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine success stories.Two physicians are celebrating “firsts” - Dr. Peter Krause performed the first outpatient total hip replacement at LSUHSC and Dr. Kevin McLaughlin inserted the first hypoglossal nerve stimulator in a pediatric patient with Down syndrome and autism in the Gulf South. The Pathology Department continues to make headlines with their discoveries related to the impact of COVID-19 on organs.
The Office of Innovation and Partnerships has had so much news to share that we decided to give them their own recurring section. They have just announced the creation of a new design studio that will assist LSU Health faculty, staff and students with moving their ideas for new medical devices, apps, or other healthcare-related innovations from a good idea to market-ready product.
On a much sadder note, Drs. Nelson, DiCarlo and Maupin share their memories and reflect on the life of Dr. Henry Gremillion, who passed away suddenly in May. Dr. Gremillion had a huge impact on dental education, the students he taught, the patients he treated and all of his colleagues.
I extend my gratitude, as always, to all those who make this publication possible. I thank all the contributors who provide me with ideas, information and articles. I thank the rest of the team, Darlene Guillot, Dr. Judy Crabtree, Todd LaGrange, and Dr. Richard DiCarlo for all of their assistance and support.
