Graduate School Committee for Diversity and Inclusion Holds Diaper Drive

Sonia Gasparini, PhD

Associate Professor of Neuroscience, Cell Biology and Anatomy

Chair, Graduate School Committee for Diversity

The Graduate School Committee for Diversity and Inclusion would like to thank everyone who participated in the campus-wide Diaper Drive held July 15-21, 2020. Thanks to your generosity, in a short time we were able to collect a substantial donation of diapers sizes 1-6 and baby wipes that were delivered to 93 families through our partnership with Mujeres Luchadoras.

Mujeres Luchadoras is a nonprofit organization that builds community partnerships and serves the needs of immigrant families in the Greater New Orleans area who have lost their husbands/fathers to deportation. Many immigrant women work in the service industry, which has been hard hit by the pandemic. The donations were provided to the families served by Mujeres Luchadoras in greatest need.

The Graduate School Committee for Diversity and Inclusion is committed to promote and support equity and inclusion regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, political affiliation, veteran status or national origin, as well as to increase recruitment in pipeline programs to enhance interest, access, and mentoring of individuals from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Members include Drs. Sonia Gasparini (Chair), Allison Augustus-Wallace, Shyamal Desai, Andrew Hollenbach, Fern Tsien, and Arnold Zea. Graduate student representatives Ciera Singleton, Micquel Downs and Whitney Walkowski, and postdoctoral representatives Drs. Ayesha Umrigar and Virginia Ronchi are also members of the committee.
