High school students learn basic medical procedures during Day With DocsDay with the Docs is a partnership pipeline program co-sponsored by the Southwest, Southeast, and Central Louisiana Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), and the public school systems of participating parishes. It is designed to give students who are serious about a career in healthcare a chance to see what life is like as a medical student and get an up-close look at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine. The event is coordinated by the second-year medical student class Vice President of Community Affairs with support from Dr. Daryl Lofaso, Director of Simulation Operations Clinical Skills Lab and Ms. Alicia Tate, Simulation Technologist.

High school students learn basic medical procedures at Day With DocsStudents from high schools across Louisiana (Greater New Orleans, Northshore, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Charles areas) visited campus on Thursday, April 2 for a day of activities with medical students. Students visited six stations of hands-on activities run by second-year medical students, which included: case simulation where students performed CPR on a patient mannequin, laparoscopic training, ultrasounds, gross organs, heart and lung sounds, and a Stop the Bleed mini course where they learned how to apply tourniquets, pack wounds and prevent further bleeding. The event also included “Medical School 101” with Dr. Hamilton Farris, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, giving the students the opportunity to learn about the medical school admission process and medical school curriculum, as well as learn what life is like as a medical student through a Q&A panel with medical students.
