Orthopaedic Surgery Holds Special Lecture

Guest Professor Mohit Bhandari, O.Ont, C.M., MD, PhD, FRCSC Presents "It All Begins with an Idea: The Decline of Disruptive Ideas in Science"

Guest professor Dr. Mohit Bhandari recently presented the lecture "It All Begins with an Idea: The Decline of Disruptive Ideas in Science" at the invitation of the department of orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Bhandari opened the lecture with a series of slides highlighting the decline of disruptive ideas within orthopaedic surgery as well as scientific research in general. As academia has developed over time, there has been an increased emphasis on productivity rather than impact, he explained, leading to lower quality research with a lower degree of clinical significance. The decline of impactful research coincides with the increased utilization of artificial intelligence.

Generative AI has been disruptive and will continue to be disruptive to many fields; however, Dr. Bhandari argues that generative AI will never be able to replace the art of idea generation as this can only be done by humans. Idea generation can be done by anyone, and certain strategies can be harnessed to improve our capacity to do so.

Dr. Bhandari encouraged everyone in the room to dedicate a few minutes a day to think. Simply slowing down and taking the time to step away from the work at hand can frequently lead to new ideas and solutions that may not have previously been apparent, he said. Dr. Bhandari emphasized tools in his own life that have helped him to augment his creativity. He frequently spends time with experts in fields vastly different from orthopedic surgery such as mathematics, psychology, and even theater. Through these interactions, he forms new ideas and ways of thinking.
