SIGMA The Art of Medicine Exhibit 2026

Prints at the SIGMA Art of Medicine eventThe LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine community gathered for a vibrant celebration of creativity at The Art of Medicine: Visual Art Exhibition, held in the Lion’s Eye Building in the evening on Monday, March 23.

The event brought together students, faculty, staff, family members, and friends for an inspiring evening that highlighted the artistic talents within the LSUHSC community.

smocked dresses as part of the art eventThe exhibition featured 23 artists and 52 pieces of artwork, spanning a wide range of mediums including paintings, ceramics, mixed media, ink and charcoal drawings, textiles, and poetry. The diversity of artistic expression reflected the many ways members of the medical community engage with creativity, storytelling, and reflection outside of their clinical and academic work.

People gather around a painting at the art eventThe event was organized by second-year medical student Christi Kruger, who also contributed several of her own pieces to the exhibition.

“This event is about celebrating the incredible creativity that exists within our medical community,” Kruger said. “Medicine and art both require observation, interpretation, and humanity. It is wonderful to see how many people express those qualities through creative work.”

SIGMA band performsThe evening was accompanied by live music from the SIGMA Band, who performed a lively mix of pop, soul, and feel-good music. The band included Camilo Fernandez (L1) on bass and drums, Ryan Smith (L3) on guitar, Joseph Starns (L4) on bass, Samuel Rosenau (L1) on guitar, Carter Rigby (L2) on piano, and vocalists Cara Ramos (L4), Myra Berthiaumi (L1), and Grace Tomeny (L4).

Strong turnout for the eventThe turnout exceeded expectations, with well over 100 attendees filling the space throughout the evening.

“The turnout was incredible,” Kruger shared. “The energy in the room was vibrant, and it was so meaningful to see people from across the LSUHSC community come together in support of one another.”

Pottery exhibit at the eventThe exhibition also marked an important milestone for the tradition of the SIGMA Art Show. Originally held before the pandemic, the event returned last year for the first time in several years, and this year’s success signals strong enthusiasm for continuing the tradition as an annual celebration of the creativity and talent within the LSUHSC School of Medicine community.
