The Association for Women in Science South Louisiana Chapter (AWIS-SL) is proud to sponsor the AWIS-SL Outstanding Young Scientist Travel Award to promote the participation of female graduate students and postdoctoral researchers at national scientific conferences. AWIS-SL is an organization of professional women in science, ranging from graduate students to professors, with a mission dedicated to the promotion of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) through scholarship, leadership, education, mentoring, advocacy, and community outreach.

AWIS-SL is committed to helping women in STEM achieve their greatest potential at every stage of their career. AWIS-SL recently recognized both Eden M. Gallegos, BS,Image Predoctoral Fellow in MD/PhD Program - Physiology/Comprehensive Alcohol/HIV/AIDS Research Center and Taylor F. Fitzpatrick-Schmidt, BS, Predoctoral Fellow in MD/PhD Program in the Department of Physiology as the AWIS Outstanding Young Scientist Travel Award Winners. The award provides up to $500 to attend a scientific meeting. Ms. Gallegos and Fitzpatrick-Schmidt will be attending the American Physiological Society Summit in Long Beach, CA next month.

Members of AWIS-SL collected gifts for the Salvation Army through the Christmas donor program. AWIS-Image PresentsSL sponsored two seniors through the Silver Bells program, a family through the Adopt-A-Family program and two boys through the Angel program. Members of AWIS generously donated to the program and delivered most Christmas wishes and some bonus Christmas surprises right in time for the holiday season. We greatly appreciate the support by AWIS-SL members who brought holiday cheer to the people around the city of New Orleans.

AWIS-SL hosted a Holiday Networking Social at the home of Dr. Carmen Canavier. Over 40 attendees enjoyed the holiday festivities, and faculty and trainees were able to network.
