About LSUHSC CARC

Angela M. Amedee, PhD
Professor
Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology LSUHSC School of Medicine
CARC Co-Investigator
Research Interests: Effect of alcohol consumption on HIV pathogenesis, viral reservoir establishment and maintenance, and development of comorbid diseases.

Scott Edwards, PhD
Assistant Professor
Department of Physiology LSUHSC School of Medicine
Director of the Information Dissemination Core
Research Interests: Investigation of neurobiological changes associated with altered motivational systems in drug and alcohol dependence.

Our most recent focus is on the interaction of addiction and chronic pain.  Employing animal models of these conditions, we are investigating how inflammatory pain alters central reinforcement circuitry and motivated behavior.

Tekeda Ferguson, PhD
Assistant Professor
Department of Epidemiology LSUHSC School of Public Health
Co-Director of the Data Management Core
Research Interests:  Chronic disease epidemiology, human studies, and surveillance data collection and analysis. Research takes a biopsychosocial approach to understand the effects of alcohol use with traditional pathophysiologic measures and the social environment on chronic disease development in people living with HIV.

Richard Ashman Professor and Head  Department of Physiology LSUHSC School of Medicine
Director Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center of Excellence
CARC Principal Investigator | Director T-32 Alcohol Training Grant

Research Interests:  Interaction of alcohol with inflammation and oxidative stress as they impact on metabolic homeostatic mechanisms in the SIV/HIV host. The bidirectional translational approach and integrative nature of our studies provides a unique platform to elucidate pathophysiological mechanisms that ultimately contribute to increased risk of comorbid conditions in persons living with HIV.
