4th Year Visiting Students (Sub-Internships)

We welcome fourth-year medical students to complete a 4-week orthopaedic surgery rotation with our program. This experience is designed to provide a true, immersive look at our training environment, clinical culture, and educational philosophy.

Rotating with us offers more than just exposure—it allows you to:

  • Work directly with residents and faculty across multiple institutions
  • Participate in operative cases, clinics, and academic conferences
  • Experience our team-based approach to patient care and resident education
  • Demonstrate your skills, work ethic, and fit within our program

Our visiting student rotations have been consistently recognized as the “Best Senior Rotation” by the LSU School of Medicine, reflecting our commitment to excellence in medical student education.

Why Rotate With Us?

  • Diverse Clinical Exposure across trauma, pediatrics, and adult reconstruction
  • High-Volume Surgical Experience with early involvement in patient care
  • Direct Faculty Interaction and mentorship opportunities
  • Strong Resident Camaraderie and supportive learning environment
  • Exposure to Multiple Training Sites, each with unique strengths

Experience New Orleans

Rotating with us also means spending a month in one of the most vibrant and culturally rich cities in the country—New Orleans.

Sky View of Downtown New Orleans and Jackson Square
New Orleans offers:

  • A world-renowned food scene and diverse culinary culture
  • A rich blend of history, music, and architecture
  • Year-round festivals and live entertainment
  • A welcoming, energetic environment that makes your rotation both professionally rewarding and personally memorable

Few training experiences combine high-level surgical education with such a unique and dynamic setting.

Application Process & Selection

All visiting students must apply through the Association of American Medical Colleges Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) Service.

  • LSU students: Apply through internal scheduling processes
  • Non-LSU students: Apply via VSLO(AAMC)

Selection Process:
Due to the high volume of applications and limited rotation availability, applicants are screened based on academic performance, including medical school coursework, board examination performance, and overall academic achievement. We seek students who demonstrate a strong work ethic, professionalism, and a genuine interest in orthopaedic surgery.

Early application is strongly encouraged, as rotation spots are competitive.
