Bio

Dr. Melanie Edwards has joined the faculty in the Department of Surgery at LSU in New Orleans as a thoracic surgeon as of August 21, 2008.  Born in Alberta, Canada, Melanie has a strong Jamaican heritage and will bring a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to LSU.  She received her Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama in 1997.  She received her Doctor of Medicine in 2000 from LomaLindaUniversity in California.  She did her surgical training at the BethIsrael Deaconess Hospital in Boston, completing her chief residency in 2006.  Since then, she has been a resident in cardiothoracic surgery at St. Louis University Medical Center in Missouri.  Dr. Edwards has received a number of awards (including AOA in medical school).  She has been active in community service on a number of fronts, having done mission medical work in Kenya and Malaysia, for example.  Dr. Edwards will concentrate on thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology and will be practicing at LSU Interim hospital and Ochsner-Baptist.  She is interested in clinical research and has a strong history of excellence in teaching.  We are very pleased to have Dr. Edwards join our faculty.
